Winter Series Week 4

The rain had abated since Lee Valley Youth CC’s youth races in the morning and the sun had even come out, however, the cold wind stiffened, with a strong headwind up the finishing straight, to make a hard days racing. Over 100 riders took to the circuit today, thanks to all for your fantastic support!

4th Cats – “The Hare”

The conditions soon began to count with many a selection via the back door – two groups formed, with the latter nearly a lap down at the end and many stragglers lapped during the race.

Much kudos to Andy Robinson from CC Ashwell who held out alone for several laps but the chasers always kept his lead in check. The Hoggenberg finish takes no prisoners and you had to feel for Andy who was swept up within sight of the line with Michael Evans forging clear up the final ascent to claim a win by a few bike lengths.

234 – “The Wolf”

A big field for the tougher race of the day with a number of 4th cats chancing their arm with the higher cat riders. Attacking riding from ELV’s Jonathan Tomlinson up the Hoggenberg allowed a break of 5 to form, also containing strong man Colin Ward and Paul Hart, with Youth A rider Theo Modell. They set an agressive pace, and after a few laps the lead group whittled down to just Ward, Hart and Modell.

Shortly after this a crash in the bunch split the field, with a group of 17 chasing the leaders with a second group of 9 a further 20 seconds back. Perhaps realising their advantage the leaders forged on, and the gap quickly grew to around a minute, a lead they maintained throughout the race. The three leaders set a punishing pace, lapping the second group on the road with a few laps to go, with Ward in particular driving the pace hard. In the end he was just too strong, winning the final sprint with Hart to take the win. Modell rolled in third, having been dropped with 3 laps to go, a very impressive ride from the ex-ELV Youth A rider.

Meanwhile, the large group seemed mainly content to contest the minor placings, but this wasn’t enough for everyone, with Jonathon Tomlinson again forcing the pace and creating a gap, one that he held to the finish. A special mention for him, having only just returned to racing after several seasons on daddy duty.
