Hog Hill Winter Series 10 – Results

14th February 2009

Updated series standing available here

We are very sorry to have to announce that East London Vélo’s Ruth Middleton came off her bike in the tenth race of the series.  She has broken her collar bone and so will be unable to ride again for several weeks.

Ruth, however has been crowned as the Winter Queen of the Hill as her lead in the Women’s series is now unassailable.

We all wish you a speedy recovery, Ruth.

The full circuit was in use this week, in an anti clockwise direction. The mud and standing water from the previous week had been cleared away.

The race started off fast, helped by a tailwind up the Hoggenberg climb. The bunch was soon down to half strength as behind them dropped riders started to coalesce into two chasing groups. The bunch forged ahead, with Ian Gentry (VC Baracchi) and Alex Christians (London Phoenix) prominent at the front as they crested the hill.

Gentry and Christians rode strongly at the front for the rest of the race, and at the finish Christians had enough left to sprint over the line in first place as Gentry paid for his efforts and came in at the back of the group.

This week saw a fast start to the 3/4 race, with Rob Jeffroy (London Dynamo) and Jonathan Appleby (North Road CC) leading the bunch up the smaller hill of the top circuit and down the descent. The bunch largely held together until a significant attack was launched 20 minutes in, as Nigel Stephens (Rapha Condor), Hugo Humphreys (LYVCC) and Henry Martin (Oxford University CC) flew up the hill away from the main group. However, they were soon reeled back in by the attendant field. Further attacks followed from Jeffroy and Martin, again seeking to escape on the climb, which saw the bunch strung out behind them and they successfully opened a gap as they crossed the start/finish line. Once again this lead was short lived as determined work by Humphreys dragged the bunch back to them as they began the descent at the opposite side of the top circuit.

With three laps to go Humphreys, Martin, Appleby and Jeffroy continued to push the pace at the front, but the riders stayed together. Chris Baldwin (Eagle RC) led the bunch up the Hoggenburg and through the alpine bends with 2 laps to go and looked poised to escape alongside Humphreys and Martin.

In the final lap Humphreys led the sprint to finish convincingly clear of Jamie Anderson (North Road CC), Appleby and Martin.

Ruth Middleton (East London Vélo) was quick out of the blocks and through the alpine bends, immediately creating a split in the group, with Middleton, Eryn Nolan (Dulwich Paragon), Charlie Blackman (London Dynamo) and Liz Chittenden (Eagle RC) breaking away from the remaining four riders.

Nolan and Blackman proved to be strongest on the hill and Middleton lost contact with them here each lap, but was able to recapture them before the descent. These efforts took their toll, however, and Middleton eased off to work with Chittenden, who had been following a few seconds behind.

With three laps to go Nolan, who had looked incredibly comfortable on the hill, broke away from Blackman, and after another lap had established a lead of 20 seconds. She continued to ride away from Blackman and crossed the line to win 35 seconds clear.

Another quality field gathered on the start line for what was to be a demanding, attacking race.

The bunch was immediately stretched in response to early attacks on the lower circuit. Dean Robson (Oxford University CC) escaped very early on. An initial attempt by two riders to follow him was unsuccessful and Robson quickly developed a lead of 20 seconds. Phil Hersey (Eagle RC) worked hard at the front of the bunch and then made a gap stick as he began the descent in pursuit of Robson. The next lap saw Robson make light work of the hill again, whilst Hersey was to be caught on the lower circuit. Repeated attacks punished the bunch, which began to fracture, and four riders; Cameron Austin (London Dynamo), Andy Davies (Fit-For), Werner Otto (Finchley RT) and Hersey, formed a chase group in pursuit of Robson. Tiring from his early efforts, Robson eventually opted to wait for this group.

A serious chase from the bunch then followed when Flavio Zappi (Oxford University CC) attempted to break clear to bridge to the lead group, creating a small break; five were then chasing five. However, on the lower circuit David Barnes (East London Vélo) put in a huge effort at the head of the main group, and the chase group was enlarged. Led by Barnes, this group of ten riders caught the leaders leaving a gap to the remaining riders, who struggled to respond to the increasing pace on the hill. Henry Martin (Oxford University CC) dropped back and East London Vélo supporters were disappointed to see Series Leader Simon Bateson retire from the race at this point.

Following the catch, Otto and Dominic Schils (Lotto Olympia Interbike) launched a counter attack with Barnes and Hersey attempting to follow. Barnes made it across to the two leaders and the three established a gap of 15 seconds. London Dynamo riders Austin and Richard Hoult lead the chase from the bunch, but the gap continued to build to 18 seconds. Barnes could not hold the pace of Otto and Schils, however, and was swallowed by the bunch. Otto and Schils continued with a gap of 10 seconds from the bunch until 2 laps to go when Zappi again made a serious attempt to chase them down. As the riders crossed the line to begin the final lap, Schils began to ride away from Otto and hesitation from the riders at the front of the bunch ensured the two stayed clear, with Schils taking the win well clear of Otto. Richard Mason (London Dynamo) led the bunch sprint to take third place.

Hog Hill Winter Series 7 – Results

4 weeks to go and another fine turn out of 76 riders.

Updated series standings are available here for download.

Racing looked doubtful with icy conditions at 9.30 am which resulted in the cancellation of the LVYCC races. With huge efforts from East London Vélo riders, sweeping and cleaning the upper North circuit, the 4th (Regional C +) race commenced at 12.30. The shorter harder course soon had the field split with eventual winner Paul McGuigan, Norward Paragon, leading in the spread field.

The 3/4 cat race riding in improved conditions but still on the North circuit faced a hard race.
This time the field stayed together early in the race but again the repeated climbs up the “Hoggenburg” took its toll. Jamie Anderson, North Road CC, recently moved from 4th category, showed form to win the 3/4 race.  Young, Gustafsson of Oxford University CC giving a close 2nd.

Hog Hill Winter Series 6 – 17th January 2009

Well done to each of the 100 riders that raced today.

Updated series standings are available here for download.

More pictures can be found in the gallery.

The race was run in an anticlockwise direction. The Regional C+, B and Womens races used the hairpin bends, and the National B used the usual top circuit.

National B

Flavio Zappi – Winner of the National B race.

The numbers and quality of riders in this race continues to increase, this week ex-professional Flavio Zappi (Oxford Uni CC) and reigning National Masters Road Race Champion Martin Smith (Army Cycling Union) made their series debut. Smith’s pedal came off his bike just before the start and he quickly borrowed a bike from the host club and adapted well to the different gearing and wheels. Zappi’s professional career highlights include wearing the green jersey in the Giro D’Italia, leading the Giro Del Trentino, and finishing twelfth in Milan-San Remo. The Oxford University CC riders are benefiting from his experience, and he has plans to use the Winter Series to prepare them for racing Premier Calendar events.

As usual, the racing was fast and competitive. Zappi, Dexter Gardais (Torq-Colnago), and Matt Seaton (Rapha Condor) made a successful break, and although in the early stages their lead was not great and it looked like the race might come back together, they forged ahead until they established a convincing lead. The trio would stay away until the finish, and finished first, second, and third respectively.

Behind them, the bunch was animated by frequent attacks that saw the group split, although no one made enough of a sustained effort to cause real damage, and on the final climb, the group was back together. Al Murison, junior rider for Glendene CC took the sprint for fourth place.

Regional C+

Unlike the previous week, the racing was fast from the start, catching out several riders who went out the back early on. Wayne Crombie (unattached) and Gary Lingard (London Phoenix) rode hard up the hill, and this was sufficient to create a gap, which they maintained on the lower circuit. The two riders started to work together, and maintained the gap, as the rapidly disintegrating bunch chased hard. Dan Falconar (Dulwich Paragon CC) jumped away, and set off in pursuit of the lead pair. Crombie was the strongest of the two, and Lingard dropped back, to be joined by Falconar.

With 4 laps to go, the lead trio came together and started to hunt down the backmarkers as they built a convincing lead. Behind them, the chasing pack continued to shed riders and lost enthusiasm for their fruitless chase.

On the final lap, the first rider to appear over the brow of the hill was Crombie, and he finished well clear of Falconer and Lingard, who took second and third respectively. Metropolitan Police CC duo James Conway and Glen Carr lead the bunch in.

This race also saw a fast start, and after one lap, several riders were already out the back. James Cocker (East London Vélo/EE) made the first serious attack, setting a fearsome pace up the hill as he lead his teammate David Barnes clear of the pack. Cocker and Barnes continued to maintain a fast pace as Nigel Stephens (Rapha Condor) attempted unsuccessfully to bridge across. With a good gap established, Cocker dropped back to the bunch, his work done. Barnes looked determined to reassert his dominance after being caught the previous week, and he powered implacably ahead, crushing the bunch’s morale as he built up a huge lead until the result was in no doubt.

Behind him, Henry Martin (Oxford Uni CC) made a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to break away with 3 laps to go. On the bell lap, Nick Sparks (unattached) attacked across the line, and maintained his advantage to take second place.

Once again, a lead group of women was soon established, consisting of series leader Ruth Middleton, now riding for (East London Vélo/EE), Elizabeth Chittenden (Eagle RC), and Abigail Armstrong (London Phoenix). However, Middleton was not content with this, and attacked the group and broke clear. She rode ahead alone, increasing her lead with seemingly little effort, and crossed the line almost a minute up on the next placed rider.  Last week’s winner, Sigma Sports rider Jennifer Hewitt, retired.

Hog Hill Winter Series 5 – Results

A big thanks to all those who stood out there in the cold today making sure a safe day was had by all. Those who swept the circuit and put out the salt, the staff making hot soup, and jolly good it was too, those sitting for hours counting numbers and signing you all in, those in the judging box, taking your pictures as you crossed the line and making sure we had a correct result.

The race was run in an anticlockwise direction. Conditions were very cold, with a headwind up the climb.

Updated series standings and results from all the races so far can be found here.
Regional C+

The riders seemed reluctant to get going in the very cold conditions, and it wasn’t until the lap board came out that the racing really began. Jamie Anderson (North Road CC), Dan Falconer (Dulwich Paragon), Matt Harper (London Phoenix), and Wayne Crombie (Unattached) forced the pace up the hill, with Crombie riding particularly strongly, but the headwind on the climb blunted their efforts. They were unable to get a decisive gap, and the bunch would regroup on the lower circuit. On the final climb of the Hoggenberg, they were again at the front, with Anderson taking the win, Harper coming second, Harper third, and Crombie, paying for his earlier efforts, coming in 4th.

Afterwards, Jamie Anderson commented that he was really enjoying the winter series, particularly as a novice racer: “it gives you a whole heap of confidence when you’re starting out”.

With two time winner and series leader Jonathon Tomlinson (East London Vélo) not racing due to injury, this was a much more open race. Twenty minutes in, David Barnes (East London Vélo) got away, followed by Andy McNeill (Rapha Condor). However, McNeill crashed on the sweeping lefthand bend after the finish, leaving Barnes to ride alone. He maintained his lead for 15 minutes, but the cold seemed to sap his strength, and he was slowly reeled in by the bunch. There was more drama in the final 15 minutes of the race as another rider came down, on the same corner.

With 5 laps to go, James Cocker (East London Vélo/EE), looking strong despite a lack of racing, rode off the front on the small climb after the finish.

In an exciting finish Sam Parker (Oxford University CC) narrowly took the win from Barnes, who managed a powerful sprint despite his earlier solo effort.

3 Ruth Middleton Velo Club Londres

5 Anna Grundy East London Velo/EE

This followed a similar pattern to previous races, with an initial shakeup leaving a group consisting of regulars Ruth Middleton (Velo Club de Londres), Elizabeth Chittenden (Eagle RC), joined by Jennifer Hewitt (Sigma Sport) and Lyndall Newton-Early (Finchley RT). Unusually Anna Grundy (East London Vélo/EE) wasn’t able to stay with this group, perhaps paying the price for a night out on Friday.

At the finish, Hewitt and Newton-Early were too strong for three time winner and series leader Middleton, and they finished first, second, and third respectively.

National B

This week saw the largest field so far, with some classy riders turning out, including premier cycling writer Matt Seaton (Rapha Condor). Early probing attacks came to nothing, although one by Phil Hershey (Eagle RC), again keen to test his time trialing skills, saw him off the front for a few laps. With 3 laps to go, the group split on the top circuit, and Simon Bateson (East London Vélo/EE) jumped across to the front group and kept going, building up a small lead on the lower circuit. With two laps to go, Bateson’s lead fell, and he looked in danger of being caught. However, on the final lap, he lifted his pace, and the pursuers slowed, allowing him to cross the line alone. Behind him, Seaton and Andy Davies (Fit For) lead the bunch in.

Hog Hill Winter Series 4 – Results

Updated series standings and results from all the races so far can be found here.

More pictures from the day here.

The races was run in an anticlockwise direction. Conditions were cold but sunny and dry.

Regional B  3rd / 4th

Series leader Jonathon Tomlinson (East London Vélo), assisted by George Pearl (Southend Wheelers) set a fast pace from the off. Tomlinson showed his intent with a strong attack up the hill, which only his team mate David Barnes (East London Vélo), and Alexander McNeill (Rapha Condor) were able to follow. Tomlinson and Barnes had both won previous races with lone breaks, so the bunch had no intention of letting them repeat this feat. A fast paced pursuit put several riders in difficulty, and managed to hold the break at 15 seconds for a few laps. However, Tomlinson, Barnes, and McNeill rode well together and the trio’s lead inevitably grew.

With a decent gap established, Tomlinson and Barnes started to turn the screw on McNeill, and an exciting duel followed. The two East London Vélo men made McNeill suffer, dropping him on the hill, although he refused to give up, and his tenacity saw him hang on for 3rd place, as ahead of him Tomlinson outsprinted Barnes to cement his series lead.

The bunch were lead in by youth rider Hugo Humphreys (Lea Valley Youth CC), whose powerful sprint saw him cross the line several bike lengths in front of the remaining seniors.

Regional B Women

The race split in the first lap, as Anna Grundy (East London Vélo), Ruth Middleton (Velo Club de Londres), and Elizabeth Chittenden (Eagle RC) put the hammer down. They stayed together for the rest of the race, with Grundy and Middleton looking strongest, and Chittenden suffering on the hill but riding well to regain the group. In a dramatic sprint finish, Grundy edged out Middleton… but unfortunately there was still one lap to go. One lap later she was unable to repeat this, and Middleton took the win, with Grundy second and Chittenden third. Behind them, Stacy Cooley (East London Vélo), on her racing debut, rode with determination and placed fifth.

National B

Despite a larger, and stronger than usual field, Phil Hershey (Eagle RC) refused to be intimidated, and powered away on the hill. Hershey, a fast man against the clock, soon established a good gap, although he would pay for this later. However, a series of probing attacks in the bunch lifted the pace, and Hershey was gradually reeled in. Continuing attacks, by Simon Bateson (East London Vélo) and Cosmo Kendros (Dulwich Paragon) saw some riders shelled out the back of the group but failed to get a gap. However, a counter attack on the climb by Andy Davies (Fit-For) and James Hawkins (Cambridge University CC) saw no response from the bunch, and the two riders got away, and would spend the rest of the race building an unassailable lead. At the finish, Davies took the win from Hawkins. Richard Hoult (London Dynamo) lead the bunch in, launching an explosive attack up the final climb, with only Mark Perry (Dulwich Paragon),  Kevin Ibbetson (Fietsen Tempo), and Bateson able to react. Hoult maintained his momentum to the line for third place, as behind him, Perry and Ibbetson faded and Bateson powered past them to take fourth.

Hog Hill 08 Winter Series 3 – Results

RACE REPORT
Hog Hill Winter Series 27th December 2008

Several hours before the first race was due to start conditions were frosty but as race time approached the circuit had thawed and the surface was drying out with the aid of the very cold brisk east wind.

Race 1;    4th cat ; Regional C+    Race Time; 40 minutes         11 Laps
Just twenty one 4th cat riders on the line for this one, once under way no 36, Nigel Stephens (Rapha Condor) led the way opening up a small gap. His lead had grown to 28 seconds over chasers Dan Corby (Finchley RT) and Tim Butt (MAD CC) by the end of lap 3. By the end of lap 6, Stephens had doubled his lead to 57 seconds over loan chaser corby. Lapping consistently the lead grew, and by the end (11th lap) Stephens crossed the line 1min 28sec clear of 2nd placed rider Corby with 3rd going to Butt.

Race 2;    3rd -4th  Regional B    Race Time; 1 hour               16 Laps
Nineteen riders for this one, and again an attack from the start saw two East London Velo riders away, 109 followed closely by 130, David Barnes. At the end of lap 2 Barnes led the way with the bunch at 13 seconds. Impressive riding saw his lead over the chasers grow on each lap, and by lap 11 his lead was 1.07.  The bunch did manage to reduce this lead by the finish (16th lap) to 50 seconds when no 135, Nick Calverey (Finchley RT) won the sprint for 2nd place just ahead of Michael Corke, (London Dynamo) but it was Barnes that took the win.

Race 2;    Women        Race Time; 1 hour              15 Laps
Starting 45 seconds behind the men’s race, the four ladies stayed together until the final lap when No 52, Ruth Middleton, (VC Londres) put in a big effort at the bell to open up a small gap. Lyndall Newton-Earley gave chase to no avail finishing 3 seconds behind Middleton. Anna Grundy (East London Velo) at 10 sec, Elizabeth Chittenden (Eagle RC) at 15 sec was 3rd, and Chittenden 4th.

Race 3;    E, 1,2,3, National B     Race Time; 1 hour            16 Laps

A steady start to this race with Mark Perry, (Dulwich Paragon) leading the way for the first 3 laps. On lap 4 Emma Trott, (Halfords Bikehut) had lost contact on the steep climb up to the finish but worked hard on the decent to get back on only to lose contact again on the very next time up the climb to the finish.
By lap 12 three riders led the way, No 72 Philip Murrell, (Finsbury Park CC), Perry and team mate Cosmo Kendros, (Dulwich Paragon) with No 158, Simon Bateson, East London Velo at 21 sec.
At the bell the three leaders were only 9 seconds ahead of Bateson who was giving his all. As the riders climbed the hill the final time to the chequered flag it was a four man sprint. Kendros crossed the line 1st followed closely by Murrell 2nd, Perry 3rd with Bateson crossing the line a very tired 4th.
